Allora & Calzadilla

Allora & Calzadilla

Allora & Calzadilla has a complex artistic practice that encompasses and mixes sculpture, video, photography and performance. Jennifer Allora (USA, 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (Cuba, 1971) have been collaborating together since 1995. They approach visual art as a set of experiments that test whether ideas such as authorship, nationality, borders, and democracy adequately describe today’s increasingly global and consumerist society. By drawing historical, cultural, and political metaphors out of basic materials, Allora & Calzadilla’s works explore the complex associations between an object and its meaning. They also constantly explore the physical and conceptual act of mark making and its survival through traces. Major exhibitions include the Serpentine Gallery, London (2007); Renaissance Society, University of Chicago (2007); Kunsthalle, Zurich (2007); Dallas Museum of Art (2006); SMAK Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Belgium (2006); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2004); and The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2004). They have presented their work in numerous collective international exhibitions and they have taken part in numerous biennials including Venice, São Paulo, Whitney, Lyon and Istanbul. They live and work in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
