Fernando Alvim
Portugal
He is an artist. From 1987 to 2002 he lived and worked in Brussels. He is Angolan and he currently lives there. He has participated in more than 50 international exhibitions and has produced more than 10 art films. He is the conceptual author of the Luanda Triennale, the co-producer and co-founder of the Fundaçao Sindika Dokolo, the administrator of SOSO I LAX arte contemporânea e softwares culturais, and the conceptual author of Sindika Dokolo colecçao africana de arte contemporânea. His production is not classifiable according to the orthodox principles of formalism, genre or conceptual strategy. On the contrary, it suggests a divergence and rupture that reveals the remains of tradition, the Kimbunda lamentations (traditional Angolan music) recycled African practices, popular culture and Occidental assimilations that show the interruption of tradition. Painting and collage are his main means of expression; they are afterwards transformed in mutations, commemorative mementos and objects that embody the ideas of deaths, renaissance and memory. Recently, the fusion of materials and processes has resulted in the articulations of personal experience, as it is testified by CEdismemberment of history, an autopsy of the psychological consequences of the war.
