(Bragança, Portugal, 1964) Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid). He has served between February 2003 and October 2012 as Director of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, where he served as Deputy Director from 1996 until January 2003. Between 1992 and 1996, he worked as a “free-lance” curator, organizing three editions of the Oporto Contemporary Art Festival and curating several exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, and France. He curated the Portuguese representations in the 1st Johannesburg Art Biennale (1995), the 24th São Paulo Art Biennial (1998), and the 50th Venice Biennale (2003). He was a member of the Graduation Jury Committee at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2005), and he was a member of the International Jury selecting the curator of the São Paulo Biennial in 2006. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Roveretto and he is also a member of the Advisory Committee of Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (Badajoz). Fernandes has published his texts in several catalogues, and participated in numerous juries, seminaries, conferences, and workshops, in various artistic and academic institutions.
