Urban and media historian, cultural critic and novelist. Professor at the California Institute of the Arts and the Art Center College of Design. Some of his works are The History of forgetting: Los Angeles and the erasure of memory (1997), The Vatican to Vegas: The History of Special Effects, Bleeding Through: Layers of Los Angeles, 1920-86 (2002). In 2014 he published The Imaginary Twentieth Century.
