- João Fernandes, Deputy Director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid) will be the guest director for this edition.

- SITAC XIV will take place from the 17th to the 19th of January, 2019 in Mexico City.

- SITAC changes and extends its temporality through the parallel program: SITAC Nodos.

Considered as a reference in Mexico and other countries, the International Symposium on Contemporary Art Theory (SITAC) is a periodical event of the Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo (PAC), which aims to promote the reflection and the spreading of critical and theoretical thinking regarding the current artistic production. Throughout thirteen editions, this public forum has invited more than 200 notable artists and theorists from our country and from abroad, presenting their ideas and discussing relevant themes for the art scene.

SITAC XIV will be held from the 17th to the 19th of January, 2019 in Mexico City under the direction of the curator and current artistic deputy director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), João Fernandes (Portugal, 1964), who has a wide experience in museum management, teaching and independent curatorship. Some of his career highlights are being an independent curator at the Contemporary Art Conferences of Oporto (1992-1996), as well as being the curator of the Portuguese representations at the 1st Johannesburg Biennale (1995), the 24th São Paulo Art Biennale (2003) and the 50th Venice Biennale (2003), as well as directing the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Serralves (Oporto).

The Portuguese curator is currently working on the theme for this edition and determining the guest speakers in coordination with the advisory committee, which on this occasion is composed by Eduardo Abaroa, Issa Benítez, Carmen Cuenca, Julieta González, Aimée Labarrere, Patricia Sloane, and Luis Vargas Santiago, as well as the Coordinator of SITAC Nodos Christian Gómez, and PAC’s Director Mariana Munguía.

New structure for SITAC

The first twelve editions of SITAC had a three-day symposium format, taking place in Mexico City. As of 2016, SITAC adopted a different timeframe, in order to develop ideas in depth, in a broader spectrum of dialogue with the artistic community and its audience. As a result of this experience, in addition of the public forum (SITAC Ediciones), SITAC Nodos is a continuous program developed through a series of activities designed to encourage the exchange of ideas and cultural production between the different regions of the country.

The main objective of these initiatives is to facilitate a more horizontal, plural and multidisciplinary discussion; to extend in space and time the discussion of the themes addressed in SITAC’s different editions, as well as questioning the artistic centralization of the country. During the following months, SITAC Nodos will present activities such as conferences, seminars and workshops in cities like Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Mérida, and Tijuana.
