He is Professor of Latin American Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1992 to 2002 he was a coordinator of the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group. His recent publications include Subalternity and Representation (1999; Spanish version 2005); Testimonio: On the Politics of Truth (2004); and Hacia un nuevo latinoamericanismo (forthcoming, 2008). He co-edits the University of Pittsburgh Press book series Illuminations: Cultural Formations of the Americas.
