Lithuania

They are artists living and working in Vilnius and studying the transformation of the society going through a transitional period of changes. Since 1993 they develop interdisciplinary art programs-a model for social and artistic practice with the interest to design organizational structures that questions the relativity of freedom. Their methodology varies from archival research to building complex works as production sites that often challenges media and sometimes politics. Their art projects deal with the urban environment, architectural developments, cultural heritage of the soviet past aiming to reclaim the public space that is currently under the threat of privatization. They use art platform to render public spaces for interaction and engagement of the social groups, evoking local communities and encouraging their cultural and political imagination. Urbonas have exhibited their works at Documenta11 in Kassel, Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt/Main (both 2002), 3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art (2004); the 22nd Biennale di Sao Paulo and the 9th Lyon Biennial (both 2007.)
